Mail Delays  Reply with quote

We are currently receiving a huge influx of email, which contain virus-infected attachments. Currently there is no way we can filter these out, as they are sent from random addresses, and the subject falls under 1 of several too common subjects like "hi" and "hello". We are looking to come up with a way to filter these, but so far we have not found anything that will not also block legitimate emails. Until this flow of these emails slows or we can find a safe way to filter them, everyone will be experiencing a delay in sending and receiving emails. Do not sending test messages, as this will only add even more load and delay email more.

This new virus is making it's rounds on the net and from all reports I've seen indicate that it will be worse than the nimbda outbreak that happened last year. It's called "Novarg", but most places also refer to it as "MyDoom". You can read about it here

We have implimented a filter to block the commonly named attachments that are associated with this virus. Here is a break down of them:

If the file starts with:

document
readme
doc
text
file
data
test
message
body

AND that attachment ends with the file extension:

pif
scr
exe
cmd
bat
zip

The messages will be rejected from the server for delivery.
This may effect some users who are sending legitimate attachments with these names, but 99% of the email blocked by this will be the virus emails. This will help the mail server performance to increase, but due to the large queue that currently exists on the mail servers, it will take some time before these changes are noticable.
